Howard Lederer lived in a family of five in which he liked betting on different card games when he was young. He discovered himself getting very aggressive in these card games as he was competing against his dad. After graduating from high school, Howard decided to place higher education on hold for a little while and headed to New York to play some formidable chess. While playing chess, he was introduced to a poker game going on in the back of the room. Howard’s 1st two years were rough as he would play many hours and do not win most times. He earned some additional money by becoming an assistant for the poker players. He theorized he possibly could better his game by analyzing his life outside of poker. He brought about an attempt to get more sleep and focus attention even more on poker.

The real improvement in his game happened when he began playing at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon association where the best gamblers would frequently wager against one another. He was able to access some of the foremost players in chess. With their help, Howard Lederer would sharpen his strategic thinking skills. Howard applied these strategy ideas to the game of No-Limit holdem.

Howard also helped his sibling Annie Duke learn poker. Annie Duke was an excellent student of the game as she constantly asked questions about how to make the proper decision. Howard told Annie to move out to Vegas and play in the World Series of Poker competition. She is one of the strongest women players the poker arena has ever seen. Howard headed to Sin City in 1993 and competed in cash games for the next decade. When the WPT grew in popularity, Howard decided to participate in more tournaments.
