Howard Lederer lived in a family of five in which he loved gambling on different card games at a young age. He discovered himself getting very competitive in these card games while playing his dad. After finishing Sr. High school, Howard made a decision to put higher education on hold for a little bit and moved to New York City to compete in some serious chess. While playing chess, he was brought in to a poker game going on in the back of the room. Howard’s first 2 years were rough as he played countless hours and do not win a majority of the time. He made some additional money by becoming an runner for the poker enthusiasts. He judged he could better his game by balancing his life outside of poker. He brought about an attempt to get more sleep and concentrate more on the game.

The definite improvement in his abilities began when he began betting at the Mayfair Club in New York City. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon association where the best gamblers would often challenge one another. Howard had access into a number of the best minds in chess. With their assistance, he would tweak his logical thinking abilities. Howard used these strategic ideas in the game of No-Limit texas hold’em.

He also assisted his sibling Annie Duke learn poker. Annie was a great student of poker as she constantly asked questions about how to make the correct choice. Howard told Annie Duke to move out to Sin City and compete in the World Series of Poker competition. Annie is one of the best female players the poker world has ever seen. He relocated to Sin City in 1993 and competed in money games for the following decade. When the World Poker Tournament gained popularity, Howard made the decision to play more tournaments.
