Gaming chips have been manufactured from a huge range of materials in an almost endless selection of variations since the creation of gambling and the need to keep an eye on winnings. The most commonly used materials used today in the manufacture of new poker chips are plastic, clay composite, and acrylics. Clay chips, the original of the group, have been made in the US since the late 1800s.

Back in the 19th century, poker enthusiasts appear to be using any tiny valuable object you can imagine. Early poker players sometimes employed jagged gold pieces as well as chips – normally made of wood and clay. By the 1900s, poker chip designs started to play a bigger prominence, and the smooth sides of older chips were given up to chips with slits to hold them neatly piled up with each other.

There is little debate that poker has grown steadily in universal appeal ever since its origin in the 19th century. With the explosive growth of online gambling and specialty television shows, community interest in poker has accelerated a lot faster than ever before. Most folks are initially introduced to poker by television showslike Bravo’s "Celebrity Poker Showdown" or "Poker After Dark," and most will bet on their 1st hands on the net. Despite internet poker’s growth, nothing replaces the feeling of holding heavy poker chips in your hands, throwing chips into the center of a casino table, or stacking high pilesstacks of chips after showing a victorious hand.
